Joseph Johnson diary, 1772-1773.

One volume, dating from November 18, 1772 to February 1, 1773. The diary was kept by Joseph Johnson, a Mohegan preacher, during his time teaching both children of the Tunxis tribe and children of European settlers in Farmington, Connecticut. The diary includes his farewell sermon. Johnson was educated at Eleazer Wheelock's Indian Charity School, and moved to Farmington at the suggestion of fellow Mohegan clergyman Samson Occom. He was ordained at Hanover, New Hampshire in 1774.

Connecticut Mohegan leader. In 1758 Johnson entered Eleazar Wheelock's school for Indians, then located in Lebanon, Conn., and in 1766 or 7 left to become a teacher among the Iroquois. Condemned as a drunkard by Wheelock in 1769, Johnson spent two years at sea and in Providence, R.I., before his conversion in 1771.
